Spare the rod 27 May, 2008

Yesterday we had another one of the “first time” moments in our home. This time around it was the Drama Queen’s turn. She got her first proper hiding (spanking) with Daddy’s belt!!! She usaully got time-out or I would hit her with my barehand, but yesterday’s offense was serious. At least I think at was! Also, she is of age big enough to get a belt-hiding! She fibbed … she told a lie and yes, in our home that’s a serious offense.
Oh my, I can’t remember when it was CJ’s first time, but yesterday it felt like I did this for the very first time. I am not sure who felt more pain, me or the Drama Queen. She was very sad afterward. But later that evening her version of the story to her daddy made me feel a whole lot better…
“Daddy, do u know what happened today? I got a hiding with your belt for telling lies. It was very sore, but mommy had to do it cos I wasn’t suppose to tell lies. Next time she should give me more then two spanks cos telling lies is very wrong”
Proverbs 13:24 (Amplified Bible)
He who spares his rod [of discipline] hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines diligently and punishes him early.

Flashcards 25 February, 2008

The drama queen is in Grade R this year. She is in a class that prepares them for “big school” One of the things they do this year is to learn to read. The Drama Queen is very excited about the idea, but not very co-operative when we need to “practice” her reading. She also gets very confused and swops her letters around. For example, s-a-s spells sas, but the drama queen will end up saying ass. It causes lots of frustrations and at times, tears to. So what does a good mommy do … I made a whole lot of flash cards last night and cut them out in neat little squares. I am gonna put this all over the wall in her room so she can read it at every opportunity she gets. She won’t even realise she is practising her “reading” . Brilliant idea when I started. After cutting out all those flash cards I had blisters it felt like I had blisters on my fingers !!!

Spring is coming 1 August, 2007

Today I was once again, like many other times, taken aback by the zest for live the drama queen has. She is so cognitive of the miracles of nature. She is always the first one to see a butterfly in the garden or hear the chirping birds first thing in the morning.
Today was no different. This afternoon when I fetched her from creche she was so excited to show me something she discovered. She practically begged me to walk faster cos she wanted to show me something “special” … one of the trees in the play garden had new blooms!!! Do you know what that means, mommy? It means that its time for spring!!! Yippee, she shouts out with so much glee and excitement in her voice and very evident in the expression on her face.
This girl of mine loves nature in all its glory!
